The Sum of Your Numbers: Reading the Bell Curve

Add up the six numbers of any 6/45 ticket and you get a total between 21 and 255. But those totals are not equally common: they follow a bell curve peaking around 138. Totals between roughly 106 and 170 cover the great majority of all possible combinations — simply because there are far more ways to build a middle-sized sum than an extreme one.

What the curve tells you

A ticket summing to 30 (like 1-2-3-4-5-15) is rare as a category — not because it's unlucky, but because very few combinations produce such a low total. When you pick from the fat middle of the curve, your ticket resembles the bulk of all possible tickets.
